God reveals Himself as a Covenant Maker and Covenant Keeper in Deuteronomy 7:9,10: “Therefore know that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments; and He repays those who hate Him to their face, to destroy them. He will not be slack with him who hates Him; He will repay him to his face.”
In First Chronicles 16:14-19 we are told: “He is the LORD our God; His judgments are in all the earth. Remember His covenant always, The word which He commanded, for a thousand generations, The covenant which He made with Abraham, And His oath to Isaac, And confirmed it to Jacob for a statute, To Israel for an everlasting covenant, Saying, ‘To you I will give the land of Canaan As the allotment of your inheritance.’ When you were but few in number, Indeed very few, and strangers in it.”
Galatians 3:26-29 confirms the ratification of that covenant and incorporation of God’s promises to Abraham in the New Covenant.
Psalm 105:8 sums up God’s stand toward covenant when it declares: “He has remembered His covenant forever, The word which He commanded, for a thousand generations,….”
The covenant keeping nature of God is the reason America is in trouble and simultaneously the foundation for hope in saving it.
In the early 1600’s, 102 passengers set sail for Jamestown with a charter to establish a colony. A rather large storm blew them off course and they landed in Plymouth with a big problem – no charter, made colonizing this area potentially dangerous. By the Hand of Divine providence they forged a covenant incorporating God into government! They said, “In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord, King James, by the Grace of God, of England, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, e&. Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia, do by these presents, solemnly and mutually in the Presence of God and one of another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our better Ordering and preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid;….”
America was born in covenant with God for the propagation of the gospel! God has not forgotten – we dare not! The same covenant that brings judgment for rebelling against God’s Word offers believers an avenue of intercession guaranteeing cleansing and restoration. “The Sure Mercies of David” is a book that outlines this covenantal intercessory link and will be available on our new web site in mid March.
