Scripture: Genesis 15: 8

Genesis 15:1-8 is one of the most important encounters Abraham ever had with God.  God came to him and said “Look!  Count the stars, if you can.”  He couldn’t.  Abram was complaining about the promise not coming to pass. “Where is your promise?  All You ever do is promise and I haven’t seen any of it!”  God said “Look – if you can number the stars, that is how many sons you will have.”  And finally, in verse 8, Abram says to God, “And he said, “Lord GOD, how shall I know that I will inherit it?” Abram questioned God’s promise.  To Abram, it was only a promise given a long time ago.  It had not come to pass.  Abram wanted something stronger than just a promise.  He wanted to know God was locked in covenantally.  We need to realize how strong a covenantal promise really is.  It is the strongest thing that exists and cannot be broken without self-destruction.  The amazing thing is it wasn’t God who asked for it.  It was Abram who asked for it.  And when he did, God accepted!
