Scripture: Acts 12:22-23

Acts 12:22-23 says, “And the people kept shouting, ‘The voice of a god and not of a man!’ Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died.” It is obvious that when the early church went judicial they asked God to do to the rulers what the rulers where trying to do to them. This was a standard, biblical intercessory response that goes all the way back to the Abrahamic covenant in Genesis. God honored His original covenant with Abraham, “I will bless those who bless you, I will curse those who curse you.” In other words God says, “The way that people treat you is how I will treat them.” That is covenant justice. It has never changed. It goes all the way back to Abraham and it is the essence and the foundation of our Biblical covenant today. When the church invokes covenant, we are demanding a response from God against our enemy. When the wicked rule the righteous groan. The problem in the church today is we are so busy enabling evil by blessing it that we never strike the enemy with the Sword of the Spirit and demand covenant intervention the way the early church did. If we would, we would see an entirely different Jesus in action.
