Scripture: Hebrews 12:12-24

It is obvious from this passage, that teaching includes affliction. Affliction, according to this passage, is a lifelong proposition. Not only do people go in and out of it, but there is a fire of God that comes. For those who reject it, affliction is what brings the fear of God and possibly turns them from an eternal loss of their own soul. The God we serve is a terrifying Afflicter. But He is also a Deliverer. The problem with teaching affliction is the affliction that God sends can look exactly like the affliction that the enemy sends for obeying the Lord. What we discover is, that affliction has to be discerned. When affliction comes and we are in righteousness, it is an attack of the enemy. We have to resist it and walk through it toward the victory of Christ. Some affliction comes for the purpose of delivering us from ourselves. Every affliction in our own lives has to be discerned. When we discover the roots are in the enemy’s opposition to God’s purpose and plan for our lives, then we resist it and command it to flee.
