Scripture: Revelation 11:1-5

Revelation 11:1-5 says, “Then I was given a reed like a measuring rod. And the angel stood, saying, ‘Rise and measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there. But leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months. And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.’ These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the God of the earth. And if anyone wants to harm them, fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. And if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this manner.” It is interesting that the two witnesses in Revelation 11 demonstrate the Judicial Hand of God all the time that the enemy is treading down the Holy City underfoot. In the theology I grew up with, these two witnesses were two individuals. Recently, people with the weight of Jack Hayford have introduced their views that the two witnesses are actually the church. If they are the church, what are the differences? They could easily be the Kingly ministry and the Priestly ministry. The truth is, we reach a point where we do not really know for sure. But there is one thing that is obvious. The wrath of God leads to termination. And here are two individuals that are given the authority to terminate whatever comes against their purpose. The key understanding of “Avenge me of my adversary…” is that those who are threatening my God-given purpose, if they refuse to relent, God will remove them. That is what we need to be praying. The real question is, are we praying that? We should be! Give place to wrath, create a path!
