Scripture: Genesis 38:8-10

Genesis 38:8-10 states, “And Judah said to Onan, ‘Go in to your brother’s wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother.’ But Onan knew that the heir would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother’s wife, that he emitted on the ground, lest he should give an heir to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased the LORD; therefore He killed him also.” Does God so seek a family that He is willing to terminate those who refuse to give Him the family He wants? I certainly do not think of God in those terms and yet, this passage shows God’s termination of an individual whose actions do not seem to rise to a level of ultimate punishment. It is obvious that God has a different standard than most of us. When it comes to issues of sexuality and personal responsibility, God’s standard is far different from the one we have culturally. These are the passages that make it difficult to pastor deviant lifestyles!
