Scripture: Genesis 11:1-4

Genesis 11:1-4 says, “Now the whole earth had one language and one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there. Then they said to one another, ‘Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.’ They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. And they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.’” The whole earth had one language and everyone could speak to each other and come to agreement if they so choose. And they agreed to build a city and a tower. But the height they were going to build it, according to historical calculations, was above the height of the water in the flood. It seems the whole purpose of the tower and the city was to build it above what God could reduce it to in judgment. Consequently, we see the foundation of the rebellion against God in the building of that man-made tower.
