Scripture: Ephesians 6:10-17

One unique thing about this passage is that it outlines the nature of our supernatural warfare and then it exhorts us to put on the whole armor of God in order to walk in the midst of that warfare. Only one piece of the armor is offensive. Every other piece is defensive in nature. The Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, wins nothing from a determined enemy if it is never unsheathed. Envision yourself using the Word just like David used a sword to decapitate Goliath. We have one offensive weapon. The question is, what are we to do with it and how are we to swing that sword? Since the New Testament did not exist when Paul was preaching “Put on the whole armor…,” checking context always demands we read the whole Old Testament passage. Where did this specific teaching come from? What passage did he use? Perhaps then we can discover what he had in mind for the use of the Sword of the Spirit. How do we use the Word of God offensively? The Bible is not silent about speaking God’s Word even when addressing a mountain. If we can move mountains, surely we can swing a sword that brings national deliverance!
