Scripture: Romans 12:19

Romans 12:19 says, “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord.” The real question becomes how we should give place to wrath. Surely there has to be an answer. How do we give place to wrath? The answer has to be somewhere in the context of the verse. It says, “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; …” So if we do not avenge ourselves, how do we give place to wrath? If we do not avenge ourselves, it means God does. Our job is to ask! Did Jesus ever teach us anything about our relationship with God and avenging? He most certainly did. But that answer might be a bit surprising. Most of us who have been schooled in the Priestly have one mindset – to forgive and go on. Whatever God wants to do, let Him do. But that view goes against God’s specific plan. How does His plan work? We will have to find it by searching out the word “avenge” in Scripture. The Greek word “avenge” means, ‘Give me covenantal justice!” Give place to wrath, create a path!
