Scripture: Deuteronomy 34:9-12

Deuteronomy 34:9-12 says, “Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; so the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. But since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, in all the signs and wonders which the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, before Pharaoh, before all his servants, and in all his land, and by all that mighty power and all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.” Moses wrote the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible. Deuteronomy was the last book that Moses wrote. Moved by the Spirit, Moses called Jesus a prophet like him, and we would be wise to believe him. The only way we can accurately interpret the Word is to let the Bible define the Bible. What does a prophet like Moses look like? Verse 10 begins to outline what Moses expected, “…But since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face,…” First, a prophet like Moses is someone who knows God face to face. Verse 11 continues, “…in all the signs and wonders which the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt…” Second, a prophet like Moses can move in signs and wonders, called ‘great terrors’ like those the Lord did in Egypt. The term ‘signs and wonders’ is often thought to be interchangeable with healing and positive miracles. But verse 11 makes it clear they also refer to judicial acts of God. A prophet like Moses is one that will move in judicial acts like the judgments the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt. Verse 12 says, “…and by all that mighty power and all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.” What it means to be a prophet like Moses is defined by Moses himself. Are we going to learn to represent Jesus as a prophet like Moses?
