WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5
Scripture: Matthew 14:25-33

In this passage Jesus directed his disciples to a boat with plans to meet them on the other side of the lake. In the fourth watch of the night Jesus came to them walking on the water. When they saw Him they thought they were a seeing a ghost and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus focused them saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” He told them to take courage and not be afraid. Peter stepped out and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” And the Lord said, “Come” so Peter did just that. When Peter focused on the boisterous wind, he became afraid and began to sink. Jesus with outstretched hand caught ahold of Peter and asked him why he doubted. The end result of this interaction with the disciples was that they worshipped Jesus and declared, “Truly You are the Son of God.” It is interesting how the fear of God is used in the New Testament. Over and over again the disciples faced situations where Jesus was trying to get them to overcome their fear of man as well as their fear of the unknown. There are multitudes of examples how He walked with them to overcome fear. Surely He is also walking with us to overcome fear in the same way! He’s present with us, and He is our Arbiter concerning issues where fear arises.
